I Stepped Back Into Revolutionary Morristown Years Before I Ever Sold My First Home
By Jennifer Pickett | Compass Real Estate
"People don't just buy homes in Morristown they become part of a story that has been unfolding for more than 300 years."
Before I Was a Realtor®, I Was Wearing Colonial Clothing
Jennifer Pickett volunteering at Historic Speedwell in Morristown in June 2014—nearly two years before becoming a licensed New Jersey Realtor®. My connection to Morristown began long before I ever sold my first home.
June 2014.
The summer air was warm as I adjusted my colonial dress outside Historic Speedwell in Morristown.
Around me, Revolutionary War soldiers prepared for battle demonstrations. Children wandered through military encampments, blacksmiths worked at their forges, and families stepped back in time to experience one of New Jersey's most remarkable historic sites.
I wasn't there because I worked in real estate.
I was there because I genuinely loved history.
At the time, I had no idea that less than two years later I would earn my New Jersey real estate license—or that this remarkable town would become the place where I'd build my career helping families buy and sell homes.
Looking back now, it feels like the beginning of a story I didn't yet know I was writing.
Long before I unlocked my first front door for a client, Morristown had already unlocked something in me.
It wasn't just the history.
It was the feeling.
The pride people had in their town.
The beautifully preserved architecture.
The walkable downtown.
The local businesses.
The sense of community that you can feel almost immediately after arriving.
That weekend planted a seed that has stayed with me ever since.
A Town Unlike Anywhere Else in New Jersey
I've sold homes throughout Morris County and Northern New Jersey.
Every community has something that makes it unique.
But Morristown has always stood apart.
It's one of the rare places where centuries of history blend seamlessly with modern living.
On any given day you can enjoy coffee at a neighborhood café, stroll through the Morristown Green, walk the same streets George Washington once traveled, shop at locally owned boutiques, enjoy dinner at an award-winning restaurant, and end the evening with a Broadway-caliber performance at MPAC.
Everything is connected.
History isn't hidden away inside museums.
It's woven into everyday life.
That's what makes Morristown so special—and it's one of the reasons buyers continue to be drawn here year after year.
Living Where America Helped Shape Its Future
When most people think about the Revolutionary War, they picture Boston or Philadelphia.
But Morristown played one of the most significant roles in America's fight for independence.
George Washington established his headquarters here twice.
His Continental Army endured one of the harshest winters of the war at Jockey Hollow.
Military strategy that helped shape a new nation was planned just minutes from where families now enjoy parks, restaurants, and neighborhood events.
Some historians even refer to Morristown as the Military Capital of the American Revolution.
That history isn't something residents simply visit.
They live alongside it every day.
Buyers Aren't Just Purchasing a Home
After helping more than 160 families buy and sell homes since becoming licensed in January 2016, I've learned something that has changed the way I look at real estate.
People think they're shopping for bedrooms.
Or bathrooms.
Or square footage.
But what they're really searching for is the life they'll build after they move in.
They're imagining morning walks.
Neighbors who become friends.
Restaurants where the staff knows their name.
Holiday celebrations on the Green.
Saturday mornings at the farmers market.
Concerts.
Community events.
The feeling of belonging.
That's what Morristown offers.
And that's why so many people choose to stay here for years.
"Every home has a history. Every homeowner writes the next chapter."
My Morristown Journey
More than a decade after first volunteering at Historic Speedwell, I still consider Morristown my favorite place to help families buy and sell homes.
Sometimes I think back to that weekend in June 2014.
At the time, I was simply volunteering at Historic Speedwell because I loved history.
I never imagined where life would take me next.
June 2014
Where it all began.
Volunteered as a colonial interpreter at Historic Speedwell, gaining a firsthand appreciation for Morristown's Revolutionary heritage and the community's commitment to preserving it.
January 2016
A new chapter begins.
Earned my New Jersey real estate license.
Less than two years after volunteering at Historic Speedwell, I found myself beginning a career that would eventually center around helping families buy and sell homes in one of the very communities that had inspired me.
2016–Today
Helping families write their own Morristown story.
Since becoming licensed, I've been honored to:
- Help more than 160 families buy and sell homes.
- Represent more than $90 million in lifetime real estate sales.
- Be recognized among the Top 1.5% of Realtors® in America by RealTrends.
- Receive multiple New Jersey REALTORS® Circle of Excellence Awards.
- Build a business rooted in relationships, trust, education, and exceptional service.
Those accomplishments are milestones I'm incredibly grateful for.
But they aren't what I'm most proud of.
The greatest honor is earning the trust of families during one of the most important moments of their lives.
Some clients have become lifelong friends.
Others have introduced me to their parents, siblings, neighbors, coworkers, and children because they trusted me enough to help the people they care about most.
That's something no award can measure.
Why Morristown Will Always Be My Favorite Place to Sell Homes
I've had the privilege of selling homes throughout Northern New Jersey.
Every town has something special to offer.
But Morristown has always had my heart.
It's one of the few places where you can start your morning with coffee at a neighborhood café, spend the afternoon exploring the same streets George Washington once walked, enjoy dinner at one of New Jersey's finest restaurants, catch a performance at MPAC, and still be home in time to watch the sunset from your own front porch.
History isn't something you visit here.
It's part of everyday life.
The neighborhoods each have their own personality.
The downtown is vibrant.
The community is welcoming.
Long before I became a Realtor®, I fell in love with this town.
That feeling has never changed.
After more than a decade in real estate, Morristown is still my favorite place to sell homes.
Not because of the transactions.
Because of the people.
Because of the history.
Because of the sense of community.
Because every neighborhood tells a different story.
And because helping someone become part of that story never gets old.
A Day in Morristown

9:30 AM — Walk the Morristown Green and admire the historic churches and architecture.
