Welcome to Rockaway
Quaint historic town with city amenities
Rockaway is a quaint historic town nestled among mountain ranges, diverse foliage and wildlife, lake communities, rivers and streams, miles of picturesque hiking trails, and local and state parks.
The completion of the Morris Canal in 1836 established Rockaway as a hub of industry, commerce, and culture. Today, Rockaway continues to thrive with a mix of locally-owned shops, major retailers, fine dining, and cozy neighborhood restaurants and bars.
Rockaway is home to two historical sites on the National Registry of Historic Places—the Split Rock furnace, which is a Civil War-era iron ore furnace still standing today, a 1768 Revolutionary War-era stone dwelling, and the
Ford-Faesch House. The Faesch House was a significant piece of Morris County history during the 250 years that the iron industry was prosperous in northern New Jersey.
Many homes in Rockaway boast their own unique character and historic charm. Dating back to the 1800s, many houses have been preserved with their stately original architectural appearance.

Things to Do
Rockaway is home to acres of lush open space and parkland. Egberts Lake Park offers boating and fishing opportunities, while Splitrock Reservoir is a popular kayaking destination. Discover waterscapes and a rugged 35,000-acre collection of six parks and wildlife areas at Farny Highlands Cluster. Farny Highlands is the only area in northern New Jersey that has the large, sprawling forests needed to preserve populations of endangered hawks, owls, and increasingly rare songbirds.
Farney State Park offers boating, fishing, and hiking opportunities surrounded by streams, mixed oak hardwood forest, and swamps. Lucky avian enthusiasts may glimpse the endangered red-shouldered hawk or threatened barred owl in the park’s bird watching area.
Wildcat Ridge and Mount Hope Historical Park is the go-to spot to see migrating hawks in the spring and fall. The abandoned and barricaded Hibernia Mine, New Jersey's largest known bat hibernaculum, is located within the park and is home to an estimated 26,000 little brown bats. The area is also an official Hawk Migration Association of North America "hawkwatch" site.
